I'm a former tech executive who traded a corporate paycheck for a paid off house, homeschooled kids, and a family that hasn't needed the grocery store the same way in years - all from a suburban ranch home with no farm (yet).

Hi! I'm Janiece

Look, I get it. When you have acid reflux, it is brutal. It feels like the hellfire of the eighties is trying to escape from your chest and up your throat. It is so uncomfortable, and I know this because when I was pregnant, I was dealing with this chronically. My purse had this constant rumble and jingle in it from the sound of Tums rolling around.

But Tums doesn’t always work. And sometimes you don’t want to constantly be putting these antacids in your body. So you’re likely looking for something natural, just like I was at that time.

What Causes Acid Reflux?

Before I share the natural remedy that worked best for me, I think it’s important that you understand what’s happening when you experience reflux without all the fancy jargon. Basically, the acid in your stomach is coming back up into your throat where it doesn’t belong. Your body has a little door that’s supposed to keep that acid down, but sometimes it doesn’t close all the way.

The key to feeling better? Tune in to your body and figure out what your unique triggers are. This is your first step toward finding relief – and honestly, improving your overall well-being.

Why A Natural Remedy & Why Self-Sufficiency

Here’s what I’ve learned over the last seven years of pursuing self-sufficiency with my family. Sometimes the things you’re dealing with are too expensive to actually go through conventional medicine to bother with. Or you find what they’re recommending ineffective, and they just want to put you on prescription meds. Or maybe you simply feel a general distrust that this is the best way to handle your health long-term, especially if you’re dealing with something on a chronic basis.

That’s why I’ve dedicated not just my family’s journey, but my life’s work to helping other families pursue self-sufficiency. And when I say self-sufficiency, I mean this across food, water, health, and more —all of your key life categories.

If you’re here looking for options outside of the conventional system for your health, I’m willing to bet you want those options in other areas of your life too. That’s exactly what I teach families how to build in my Sovereignty Blueprint course. We go deep into how you can create real independence for yourself and your family, starting right where you are.

My Favorite Natural Remedy for Acid Reflux

One of my absolute favorite go-to remedies for acid reflux is a homemade tincture that feels like a little jar of herbal magic! I found it online years ago and it’s a go to when I am struggling – usually when I am pregnant. If you’re pregnant or on any existing medications, talk to your medical provider before use. It blends the soothing power of nature’s best herbs with the natural goodness of raw apple cider vinegar.

Before we share it, I know what you’re going to say – I don’t have any of that stuff. I know. But what you can do is actually make a larger batch of it vs single use amounts. That way it’s ready when you need it and you can justify actually buying the ingredients in the first place.

What You’ll Need

Here’s what makes this recipe so special:

How To Make It

Here’s how to bring this magical tincture to life:

  1. Layer Those Herbs: Start by layering the chamomile and lemon balm into your jar. Honestly, this part feels so therapeutic—like crafting a little herbal masterpiece!
  2. Pour in the Vinegar: Slowly pour the raw apple cider vinegar into the jar, letting it cascade over the herbs. Fill it up to about an inch below the rim.
  3. Mix it Up: Give the mixture a gentle stir, making sure everything is well combined—watch the colors and textures blend beautifully!
  4. Cover it Up: Place a piece of cheesecloth over the jar’s opening and secure it with a rubber band or jar ring.
  5. Infuse: Now for the waiting game! Store the jar in a cool, dark spot for 6–8 weeks. Give it a little shake every other day (and feel free to dream of all the soothing relief this tincture will bring!).
  6. Strain and Store: When it’s ready, strain the mixture through the cheesecloth and transfer the liquid to your storage bottle. It’s like bottling up all that herbal goodness for whenever you need it.

Pro Tips for Storage

This tincture lasts up to six months in a cool, dry spot or up to a year in the fridge! Remember, slippery elm bark creates a mucilaginous effect, so you might notice some sediment at the bottom—totally normal! Just give the bottle a good shake before each use to mix everything back up.

How to Use

Here’s where the magic meets practicality:

  • For Adults: Take one tablespoon—straight up or diluted in a little water.
  • For Kids (2+): A ½ to 1 teaspoon mixed with a splash of water should do the trick!

This remedy is such a gentle yet effective way to soothe acid reflux naturally. It’s like giving your body a little hug from the inside out, combining the calming properties of herbs with the acidity-balancing superpower of apple cider vinegar. I hope it brings you the same relief and comfort it’s brought me.

You Deserve To Have Options

Here’s the thing: you should have trusted medical professionals you can rely on. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t also have additional options outside of the conventional system that give you more autonomy and agency over your own health.

What I’ve found in my life is that when you have options, it allows you to navigate what others—like doctors or your employer—present to you with a greater sense of clarity and balance. You’re not backed into a corner. You’re not desperate. You’re making informed choices from a place of strength.

If you found this remedy helpful, I encourage you to download my free book of natural remedies. Because if you were looking for this one, you’re probably going to come across a migraine over the next year, or a headache, or another common issue. And you’re going to need some of these simple recipes too.

Is it okay to just have cheesecloth over the opening. And where can I get all the ingredients I need.

    • Janiece Okpobiri says:

You can definitely use cheese cloth. I also added all of the links for you in the recipe but you can check your local health store which likely have all of these staples as well. Hope this helps!
